Welcome to another fabulous episode of "MacHome CD-ROM!" Yay! We’re back with a whole new outlook on life here at MacHome, and starting this month, we're ditching the old graphical interface. Just folders and software, plain and simple. We've heard your voices and we've listened. Now there's nothing to stand in the way of your enjoyment of QuickMail Pro 2.0, Traitor's Gate, Starcraft, Bugdom, Snapz Pro 2.0.1, Illustrator 8.0.1, and numerous Apple software updates.
Games, Games, Games!
If you get a chance, try Lost Souls, a particularly tasty bit of strategy game from the makers of the popular Exile series of games. We've also included Macromedia's Flash 4, the newest version of this fantastic program for creating Web animation, graphics and sound.
You'll also find Earthlink on the disc. Make sure to check 'em out if you're in need of an ISP (Internet Service Provider). They're one of the most Mac friendly ISP's in the business, and they really know their stuff. Just install the Earthlink software and you'll be spinning on the Internet for 15 hours free. After that, it's only $19.95 a month for as much Internet as you can handle. Sign up now and you can get a year's supply of MacHome for $23.95 — That's 50% of the cover price!
VUPS (Very Useful Programs)
Well, really, we like to think all of the programs on this volume are useful. And they are. But here's a few we're particularly excited about:
If you're vexed by cryptic error codes like "Type 11" — and who isn't? — check out Black and Bleu (in Application Demos). This handy-dandy program tells you the possible causes of errors and what can be done to prevent them from happening again.
Want to find out about your roots? Take a gander at Reunion 6, the geneology program all the kids are talking about.
And if you like to keep up with the news, check out NewsTicker (in Shareware Utilities), a very cool shareware program that scrolls headlines from various news pages across your screen. You can customize the program so that you can get news on whatever topics strike your fancy.
Disclaimers R Us
If you're having problems running anything on this disc, check to make sure your computer can handle it. Some programs need an iMac or better to run. This CD-ROM is laid out just like the hard disk on your own computer would be. Simply navigate through the folders and install whatever strikes your fancy. If you enjoy any of the demos on this CD, please consider purchasing the full version of the product. And, as always, be kind: pay your shareware fees. Lord knows what will happen to all those shivering cold programmers who spend their days writing cool utilities and games for our beloved Macintosh if you don't.
Please note that we make every effort to ensure that our disc is virus-free, including running checks with the latest antivirus software and virus descriptions, but we can't assume responsibility if one should slip by us.
Also, whenever you install new software, there's also a remote possibility that you may experience extension conflicts - problems caused by incompatibilities among system software extensions that are installed by various programs. Casady & Greene's Conflict Catcher 8 (in Application Demos) is an excellent tool to help you diagnose and correct any extension conflicts. There's a demo of Conflict Catcher on the "Application Demos" section of this disc.
The Short Lists, the Long List
Below you'll find a list of this CD-ROM's contents. For a description of each piece of software, look for a text file in each category's folder; i.e. Application Demos, Shareware Utilities and Internet Essentials.
Now, without further ado, please venture forth into the veritable garden of digital delight that is our September CD.
